Twisted Axles trail ride Martinsburg, NY
Installed new Carter YF carburetor bought from ebay. Part #7065S original equipment for a 1975 American General, i.e. postal delivery Jeep. Ran real good with no adjustments and had automatic (hot air) choke. Went for a ride down to Birdsall, NY and back (180 miles or so.) On the way back, engine would not idle and strong smell of unburned gas; also dieseling when shut off. Discovered that I had failed to connect the PCV valve hose to the carburetor. Reason: I forgot to do it. But the new carb doesn't have an attachement point like the old one. Result: engine blew quite a bit of oil out of various places such as the oil dip stick tube. Didn't blow any engine seals or gaskets.
Fiddled with the Jeep trying to fix it. Changed out the carb twice with other rebuilt ones I had bought from ebay. No better. Engine would idle some but only with timing advanced. Also, very low vacuum (10-12) at idle (such as it was). Swapped in a fitting from a two-barrel manifold that I have and thus made an attachement point on the manifold for the PCV hose. Swapped back to the 7065 carburetor. No better. Removed the EGR valve thinking that it might be stuck. Sprayed some WD40 onto the plunger and noticed that it drained right through. Light bulb went on. Swapped in the used EGR valve from the other manifold (after some clean up, penetrating oil, and function test). Problem solved. Good steady/smooth idle, solid 22 on the engine vacuum, no hesitation, no diesel. Set the idle and timing to specifications and back on the road again.
Reinstalled fire extinguisher on driver's side roll bar upright.
